Urban Flora is a joint EP from R&B singer Alina Baraz and Danish electronic producer Galimatias released May 19th 2015.
The two connected after Alina had found one of Gali’s beats on 8tracks and decided to sing over it and upload it to Soundcloud. They both shared their first experience meeting each other with Huffington Post, where Gali mentioned:
I still remember that very humble message in my Soundcloud inbox from Alina: ‘hey I wrote a song on your track, I hope it’s okay,’ and I was just blown away. That’s when I knew we had to create more. So we then worked on the EP for six months and didn’t meet in person until February this year when the project was already finished.
Speaking with Harpers Bazaar on the meaning behind the title, Urban Flora, Alina said it derived after Galimatias had renamed one of their songs and sent it to her.
Gali named that after a song one day. He likes to rename our songs before he sends them to me, sometimes he’ll call it, “pizza” or “tacos” or something weird. But this one was “Urban Flora” and it caught my attention. To me, “urban flora” is like the two of us. Gali has a bunch of hip hop, urban-style production. The whole concept around the album, I based around the idea of a flower. So “Urban” was Gali and “Flora” was me.
Galimatias (born Matias Saabye Køedt)[1] is a 26-year-old electronic artist from the small town of Fredericia in ruralDenmark. He currently resides in Los Angeles, CA. Galimatias is most known for his 2015 EP release Urban Flora with American singer/songwriter Alina Baraz. His discography also includes Young Chimera (2013), Luna Soul (2012) and Sunlight Reigns Supreme (2012). On June 15, 2017, Galimatias released his first single since Urban Flora, “Let Me Know.”

Early Life-2015[edit]
Galimatias began making music as a teenager, and produced tracks for Danish hip-hop acts such as Fokus Clique, Klaes, and M.I.L.O around the turn of the 2010s.[2]
In 2012, he released two EPs of mellow, downtempo instrumentals: Luna Soul and Sunlight Reigns Supreme.[3]
He began working with Alina Baraz after they were introduced to each other through Soundcloud in 2013, and their songs immediately received blog attention. Their collaborations were collected on an eight-song EP titled Urban Flora, which was released digitally by Ultra Records in 2015, with a vinyl release by Mom + Pop following in 2016. Felix Jaehn's remix of their song 'Fantasy' appeared on many dance compilations.[4]
Alina Baraz
This first “iteration” of his music integrated Baraz's soulful vocals with heavy drumbeats dipped in synth-kissed sounds, creating a seamless exploration of a smoldering relationship between electronic music and R&B. . Following its release, the praise for the EP began to pour in from publications such as FADER, NPR, Earmilk, Dancing Astronaut, and Huffington Post.[5] With the combined millions of streams on major platforms, songs such as “Fantasy” and “Make You Feel” have become classics in their own right within the electronic realm. To date, Urban Flora has recorded over 143MM plays on Spotify, with over 2MM monthly listeners.[6]
2016-Present[edit]
With the vigorous lifespan of the Urban Flora EP, Galimatias intends on further redefining electronic music in 2017, with a design-first approach. He also began experimenting with his own voice as an instrument. Galimatias’ first single in two years, “Let Me Know”, was released on June 15, 2017. The single is made with different layers of his beatboxing through vocoders, mixed into a harmony that also serves as rhythm throughout the track.[7]
'I haven't released anything for two years but that didn't mean I stopped making music,' 'I tuned out from social media for a year as well and people started sending me messages asking if I was still alive. I'm definitely not dead, but I don't ever want to create the same sound twice, and it took a good while for me to figure out what I wanted to do after Urban Flora,' he said with an interview with Complex. 'I have a lot of criteria for myself when I make music, and creating something that hasn't been heard before is definitely one of the highest ranking ones.”[8]
Sound[edit]
Galimatias uses sound as a means of designing a space, a moment, or an attitude. His new explorations marry his signature electronic sound with his love for hip-hop and R&B, genres that he credits for expanding his creative horizons from an early age. He also begun experimenting with his own voice as an instrument. “Essentially the human voice is the most versatile instrument there is, so it’s very inspiring for me to explore it, and especially to extract something new out of it,” he says. He is relentless about finding inspiration in the unexpected; in fact, one of his upcoming tracks features a main melody made out of a recording of a squeaky plastic cassette. Inspired by innovation and progress, Galimatias wants his new music to embrace the fear of not knowing how to define something brand new.[9]
