In God of War, the dark world of Greek mythology comes to life right before your eyes. Please enable JavaScript to view the comments powered by Disqus.Mobile Fighter G Gundam is now available to officially stream over at Crunchyroll, adding further to the recent deluge of mecha anime releases online.

G Gundam was one of the first spin-off alternate universe Gundam shows that Sunrise experimented with during the 90s. Prior to series like this, most of the various Gundam anime released were set in the then all-encompassing Universal Century timeline.

What made G Gundam so very different was that it was based around a tournament that occurred every four years. In this tournament, representatives from the various space colonies would send their own Gundams to compete. Whichever space colony won, would then be able to rule space for the next four years.

As you can imagine at the time, many were very confused by this total change in approach to the narrative behind Gundam and there was an initial backlash against the series. However, G Gundam was not a haphazard creation and the team behind it hadn’t planned it in haste.

This was because Yasuhiro Imagawa was one of the key figures behind G Gundam and he injected the series with a great deal of purpose and pathos. Much of what made his work on Giant Robo was very much present in series like G Gundam and in time, the fans came around to this new vision for Gundam.

In the years since, while G Gundam is a big deviation from the series that pre-date it, fans often list this anime as one of the best in the saga.

What’s particularly interesting about this release on Crunchyroll is that it follows the release of an incredibly nice Blu-ray remaster that was released in Japan last year (shown below).

Considering that Right Stuf Anime has been releasing pretty much every Gundam anime ever made on Blu-ray in the West, I can only hope that this streaming release is a portent of even better and higher definition things to come.
